Math Update

Third Grade Third grade students finished working in Martina and Fizz and have no homework for next Friday. Their homework are the thinking problems for this week. They were to find at least one way to use the following 5 numbers: 4, 9, 5, -1, 6 to make -3 and 3, 6, 4, 2, 11 to make 9. Fourth Grade Fourth graders began Hands on Equations, a manipulatetive way to work on algebra. They were to find at least one way to use the following 5 numbers: 4, 9, 5, -1, 6 to make -3 and 3, 6, 4, 2, 11 to make 9. The more ways they can find to solve this problem, the more their thinking will be challenged. Fifth Grade Fifth graders are continuing Accentuate the Negative in math and they are to do at 1.2, 1.3 qand 1.4 for homework. They are also to find at least one way to use the following 5 numbers: 4, 9, 5, -1, 6 to make -3 and 3, 6, 4, 2, 11 to make 9. The more ways they find to solve this problem, the more their thinking will be challenged.

Reading Update

Third Grade Third grade students began a new book this week called The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Their homework is to read to page 106 for Monday. Students are to write at least a 4 sentence paragraph that is a text-to-self, text, or world connection. Fourth Grade Fourth graders started reading The Song of Sampo Lake by William Durbin. Their homework is to read to page 139 for Wednesday. At page 120 they are to write a 5 sentence paragraph that is a text to self, text or world connection. Fifth Grade Fifth graders are having a short poetry unit until winter break. They wrote a poem "All My Important Thinking Gets Done In The......" If this is done, there is no assignment.

Reading Update

Third Grade Third grade students began a new book this week called The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Their homework is to read to page 44 for Monday. I you would still like a copy of the powerpoint students did, please send in a flash drive and I will copy it for you. Fourth Grade Fourth graders started reading The Song of Sampo Lake by William Durbin. Their homework is to read to page 87 for Wednesday. At page 48 they were to have writen a 5 sentence paragraph that was a text to self, text or world connection. If that is not finished, then that needs to be completed. Fifth Grade Fifth graders are having a short poetry unit until winter break. Their assignment was to write a poem using their name. Many turned it in, but if they did not, it is due on Thursday.

Fifth Grade Fifth graders presented their bicycle tour brochure and their findings about cost, expenxes and profit. We began Acdcentuate the Negative in math and they are to look at 1.2 for homework. Their thinking problem for this week is to find at least one way to use the following 5 numbers: 4, 7, 5, -3, 8 to make -6 and 3, 6, 4, 5, 9 to make 15. The more ways they find to solve this problem, the more their thinking will be challenged.

Third Grade Third grade students are putting their research for On the Day You Were Born into slide shows. They are continuing to use student links on the website to find information via the internet. There is no extra homework if they have finished their questions and used the interview questions for interviewing their parents or grandparents for some information. They may want to bring a newborn/baby picture in to add to their project. Fourth Grade Fourth graders have finished reading My Daniel by Pam Conrad. If they have finished working on flow and bubble maps for this book there is no homework. Fifth Grade Fifth graders are reading Shackleton's Stowaway by Victoria MCKernan. They are to read to page 249. If they choose to read farther, they will need to write a paragraph about every 60 pages. There will be a total of 5 text-to-self, text, or world connection paragraphs for the book.

We began another unit called Martina and Fizz that helps students solve problems through animated stories by writing detailed responses. Their homew work wa to finish 2B numbers 2 and 3. They have 3.3, 3.4, and 3.5 for Tuesday. If they did not finish this in class they need to finish that as homework. Third Grade Third grade students worked on partial product algorithms again to multiply. We began another unit called Martina and Fizz that helps students solve problems through animated stories by writing detailed responses. Their thinking problem for this week was to find at least one way to use the following 5 numbers: 10, 5, -2, 11, 6 to make 3. Fourth Grade Fourth graders are starting lesson 3 of Bits and Pieces II. They have 3.1, 3.2 for Tuesday. If they did not finish this in class they need to finish that as homework. They will have find at least one way to use the following 5 numbers: 10, 5, -2, 11, 6 to make 3. They more ways they can find to solve this problem, the more their thinking will be challenged. Fourth Grade Fourth graders are to finish reading My Daniel by Pam Conrad. There is a 5 sentence paragraph that is text-to-self, text, or world connection that they will need to write for Wednesday. Fifth Grade Fifth graders are reading Shackleton's Stowaway by Victoria MCKernan. They are to read to page 99. If they choose to read farther because there is no class next week, they will need to write a paragraph about every 60 pages. There will be a total of 5 text-to-self, text, or world connection paragraphs for the book. Students missed half of class because of the book fair and the rescheduling of PE.

Third Grade Third grade students worked on lattice and partial product algorithms to learn tools to multiply. They hav a sheet with some problems that they are to finish. In addition, they are to make a 1x2, 1x3, 1x4, 1x5, 2x3,2x4,2x5, and 3x3 examples of lattice if they did not finish in class. Their thinking problem for today was to find at least one way to use the following 5 numbers: 4, 6, 7, 11, 5 to make 5. Fourth Grade Fourth graders finished lesson 2 of Bits and Pieces II. They have 2.2, 2.3 (b & d), 2.4 and ACE problems 14 - 17 and 20 - 25 for Tuesday. If they did not finish this in class they need to finish that as homework. They will have find at least one way to use the following 5 numbers: 5, 11, 3, 6, 9 with any mathematical function to reach 1. They more ways they can find to solve this problem, the more their thinking will be challenged. Fifth Grade Fifth graders have finished lesson 3 of Variables and Patterns. Fourth Grade Fourth graders are continuing Bits and Pieces II, working with fractions. They worked on 2.1 and 2 sheets that say transparency at the top. If they did not finish this in class they need to finish that as homework. They will have find at least one way to use the following 5 numbers: 4, 7, 3, 6, 1 with any mathematical function to reach 9. They more ways they can find to solve this problem, the more their thinking will be challenged. Fifth Grade Fifth graders are in lesson 2 of Variables and Patterns. Students are to have lesson 2.3, a quiz and ACE problems: 2, 4, 6, 11, 20, and 21 if they did not finish in class. They also have find at least one way to use the following 5 numbers: 4, 7, 3, 6, 1 with any mathematical function to reach 9. They more ways they can find to solve this problem, the more their thinking will be challenged.

Fourth Grade Fourth graders started reading My Daniel by Pam Conrad. They made predictions and are reading to page 85. The will need to write a 5 sentence paragraph that is text-to-self, text, or world connection. Fifth Grade Fifth graders graders did not meet this week. They began Shackleton's Stowaway by Victoria MCKernan. Last week's assignments for students were to read to page 60 and write a 7 sentence paragraph that is text-to-self, text, or world connection. If they choose to read farther because there is no class next week, they will need to write a paragraph about every 60 pages. There will be a total of 5 text-to-self, text, or world connection paragraphs for the book.
